New podcast takes you inside the newsroom

The April 6 publication of The Standard’s expose on the hiring of the Niagara Region chief administrative officer has triggered an independent investigation of the municipality and generated a lot of reader response. As political events continue to unfold in Niagara, many readers are asking the same question: “How did the paper get that story?”.

Grant LaFleche

Grant LaFleche is an award-winning investigative journalist with the St. Catharines Standard in Niagara, Ontario.

Since he started at the Standard in 1998, Grant has been nominated for 27 Ontario Newspaper Awards, where he has been twice nominated as the journalist of the year. He has also been nominated for five National Newspaper Awards, the top prizes in Canadian journalism, and a Canadian Association of Journalists award.

His 2017 investigative series, The Wolf in Priest's Clothing, won the Ontario Newspaper Award for feature writing and the National Newspaper Award for local journalism.

More recently, his investigation into Niagara's regional government, in a series of stories called All The Chair’s Men, played a major role in triggering an Ontario Ombudsman’s investigation into the Niagara Region and impacted the 2018 municipal election. That series has been nominated for two Ontario Newspaper Awards this year, two National Newspaper Awards and a Canadian Association of Journalists Award.

His work appears in TorStar/Metroland Niagara newspapers across Canada, including the Hamilton Spectator and Toronto Star.

He was also the host of the Standard's Lake to Lake podcast. He is the current host of the Inside The Newsroom podcast.
